PICTONES

Celtic tribe of Aquitaine on the south bank of the Loire in west-central France. Limonum (modern Poitiers), their main town, was besieged by one of Caesar’s generals, Gaius Caninus Rebilius, in 51 BC. Pictones means ‘the painted ones’ and is related to the Picti of northern Scotland – philological evidence of the Celtic practice of body painting
