Champagne Boar cast potin



Celtic tribe of Gallia Celtica in NE central France. Their name, which means ‘the ancients’ or ‘the sages’, survives in Senonais and Sens (Roman  , the capital) on river Yonne, 32 miles NNW of Auxerre.


Champagne Boar. c.80-50 BC. Potin. 16mm. 3.26g. Head right, phallic hair./ Boar right, three pellets below. LT 7445, BMC 433. Good VF, smooth brown patina, great head. Ex D Simpson collection.                        Was £150. Now only £100
